Greenville

"Greenville proved that a city can rebuild itself around a river it once turned its back on."

An Upstate South Carolina city built quite literally around a waterfall, its revitalized downtown threading gardens, art, and Southern cooking along the banks of the Reedy River. Lia and I came for a weekend and kept finding reasons to extend it by another meal.

Lia and I had heard vague things about Greenville — that it was a “surprise,” that people who visited kept going back — and none of it prepared us for walking off Main Street and finding an actual waterfall roaring through the middle of downtown. Reedy River Falls sits at the heart of Falls Park, spanned by the curving, single-suspension Liberty Bridge, and the whole scene feels almost engineered for wonder, though the falls themselves are entirely natural. For decades this stretch was hidden behind parking decks and a four-lane road; Greenville tore both out and built a park instead, and now it’s hard to imagine the city any other way.

Falls Park and the Swamp Rabbit Trail

We spent our first morning simply walking Falls Park’s gardens, crossing and re-crossing Liberty Bridge to watch the water from different angles, then picked up the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a paved path that follows an old rail corridor along the Reedy River for nearly twenty miles. We only managed a few miles north toward the Greenville Zoo, but it was enough to see how the trail knits neighborhoods together — joggers, families on rented bikes, a woman walking a very unbothered goat on a leash near one of the trailside farms. Along the way we stopped at Swamp Rabbit Café & Grocery, a farm-to-table market and restaurant that’s become something of a trailside institution, for biscuits that Lia still brings up unprompted.

Main Street and the West End

Main Street itself curves gently for about a mile, lined with brick storefronts, sidewalk cafés, and the occasional bronze sculpture of a mouse or a boy fishing — small, whimsical touches the city has scattered throughout downtown. We ate shrimp and grits at a restaurant in the West End, Greenville’s old warehouse district turned arts quarter, just blocks from Fluor Field, a minor-league ballpark deliberately modeled on Fenway Park down to its own version of the Green Monster. In the evening, the patios along Main Street filled with locals rather than tourists, and it struck us both how unhurried the whole city felt for one that had clearly been working hard, and successfully, at reinvention.

Getting There

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) sits about twenty minutes north of downtown and serves as the region’s main gateway, with direct flights from most major East Coast hubs. Charlotte is roughly a two-hour drive east via I-85, and Atlanta about two and a half hours southwest, making Greenville an easy detour for anyone road-tripping through the Southeast. Downtown itself is compact and walkable, with Falls Park, Main Street, and the West End all reachable on foot once you’ve parked the car.

South Carolina's capital, where a gold-domed statehouse still bears Civil War cannon scars and a riverfront of old textile mills has been reborn as a walkable arts district. Lia and I spent a long weekend tracing that contrast, from bronze stars marking Sherman's shellfire to craft breweries humming in converted cotton warehouses.
