Xiaoliuqiu

A small coral island off the southwest coast where sea turtles outnumber tour buses, black-tipped reef caves hide beneath the cliffs, and the whole island can be circled by scooter in an hour.
We took the ferry from Donggang on a whim, mostly because Lia had read that this was one of the few places in the world where you could reliably swim with wild green sea turtles without a boat tour, a guide, or any real effort at all. Thirty minutes later we were standing on a coral outcrop of an island barely twelve square kilometres in size, renting a scooter from a stand that ran entirely on an honor system clipboard.
Turtles, Reliably, Which Is the Whole Point
Xiaoliuqiu’s coastal waters are a known feeding ground for green sea turtles, and the island has built its entire modern identity around protecting them — signs everywhere remind swimmers to keep distance, no touching, no chasing, rules that locals seem to actually enforce rather than just post. We waded in off Houbi Lake Beach with rented masks and, within maybe ten minutes, a turtle the size of a car tire drifted past us, utterly unbothered, grazing on algae along a rock shelf like we weren’t there at all. I’ve paid for turtle encounters elsewhere that delivered less than this did for free.
A Whole Island of Strange Coral Geology
Beyond the water, Xiaoliuqiu itself is a raised coral reef, and its shoreline is riddled with caves, arches, and eroded formations that make the whole coastal road feel like driving through a geology textbook. Beauty Cave and Black Dwarf Cave, both a short scooter ride from the harbor, wind back into the cliffside through narrow coral passages, some requiring an actual stoop to get through, opening periodically onto small chambers where light filters down from cracks above. Vase Rock, a coral pillar carved by wave erosion into an unmistakable urn shape sitting just offshore, is the island’s unofficial mascot, and every scooter tour stops there at least once.
When to go: April through October gives the calmest seas and warmest water for snorkeling, though summer weekends bring heavier ferry crowds from the mainland. Weekday visits in shoulder season (April–May or September–October) offer the best balance of good visibility and a quiet island.
