A northwestern coastal town of date farms and a working fish market, where Bahraini families come to watch the sunset over the causeway.
Budaiya sits on the northwest coast, close enough to Al Jasra that I nearly folded the two into one afternoon, and I’m glad I didn’t — it deserved its own trip. The town is agricultural at its core, threaded with date palm and vegetable farms that supply much of Manama’s produce, and the coast road ends at a stretch of shoreline where local families gather most evenings just to sit, talk, and watch the sun go down over the water toward Saudi Arabia.
I got there a little before six and found a spot on the sea wall between two Bahraini families who’d brought folding chairs, a thermos of karak tea, and what looked like an entire dinner in tupperware. Kids ran along the rocks chasing crabs. An older man fished off the end of the jetty with the patience of someone who wasn’t especially attached to catching anything. Nobody minded me being there; a woman even offered me a cup of tea from the thermos, waving off my attempt to say no.
The fish market near the corniche runs mornings, and I went back the next day to see it properly — wooden crates of hamour, safi, and shrimp laid out on ice, vendors calling prices in rapid Bahraini Arabic, buyers haggling over quality with the seriousness of people who cook what they buy that same afternoon. It’s a smaller, calmer cousin of Manama’s markets, with none of the capital’s hustle and all of its authenticity.
When to go: Sunset for the seafront social scene, or early morning for the fish market. The coast road is a pleasant twenty-minute drive from Manama and pairs naturally with Al Jasra.
