Edinburgh

Edinburgh is built on drama — literally. The castle sits atop an extinct volcano, the Old Town cascades down the Royal Mile in a medieval tumble of closes and tenements, and Arthur’s Seat rises 250 meters from the city center like a piece of the Highlands dropped into the urban fabric. The views from Calton Hill at sunset are worth the climb and then some.

The Old Town is a vertical city: buildings stacked ten stories high on either side of the Royal Mile, with narrow closes — alleyways — plunging down to hidden courtyards. The New Town across the valley is its Georgian counterpart, all symmetry and elegance, with the Scottish National Gallery anchoring the connection between the two. Edinburgh’s pub culture runs deep — from whisky bars in vaulted cellars to craft breweries in converted warehouses. In August, the Fringe Festival transforms every available space into a stage, making it the world’s largest arts festival.

When to go: August for the Fringe and International Festival. May through June for long days and fewer crowds. Hogmanay (New Year) is legendary.
