A modest hill on the edge of town with a summer toboggan run, a treetop walkway, and a view of the lake that requires none of Ojstrica's scramble to reach.
By our fourth day in Bled, we’d walked ourselves into mild exhaustion — Vintgar in the morning, the castle the day before, a boat trip to the island squeezed in between. Straža, the small hill on the southern edge of town, was our concession to doing something that required almost no effort at all, and it turned out to be one of the more purely enjoyable afternoons of the trip.
Up by Chairlift
A short chairlift carries visitors from the base of Straža to the top of the hill in a few minutes, gaining just enough elevation to open a clean view back over the lake, the island, and the castle on its cliff — a genuinely good angle, achieved without the sweat that Ojstrica demands. I’d assumed, before arriving, that Straža would be a minor consolation prize next to the bigger viewpoints around Bled. It isn’t. It’s simply a different, easier kind of view.
The Toboggan Run
The main attraction at the top is a roughly 550-meter summer toboggan track that winds down through the trees on a stainless steel rail, riders controlling their own speed with a brake lever. I went first, cautious on the early curves and considerably less cautious by the final stretch. Lia went next and came down faster than I did, which she has not stopped mentioning since. It’s a genuinely fun ten minutes, more thrilling than the modest hill height would suggest, thanks to a couple of banked curves that pick up real speed.
A Walkway Through the Treetops
Straža also has a short treetop walking path — a series of elevated wooden platforms strung between the pines near the summit — along with a small climbing area and a via ferrata option for anyone wanting more of a workout than the chairlift allows. We stuck to the walkway, which gave us a slower, closer look at the forest canopy than the toboggan run’s blur past the same trees.
When to go: May through September, when the toboggan track and chairlift operate on full schedules. Late afternoon offers the softest light for the lake view from the top, and the toboggan queue tends to shorten as the day winds down.
