A narrow limestone slot carved by a glacial stream at the gateway to the Voje Valley, quiet enough that the loudest thing in it is the water.
Most people who make it as far as Bohinj stop at the lake and call it a day, which is understandable — the lake earns that attention. But on our second morning we followed a tip from the owner of our room in Stara Fužina and walked the short distance to the start of the Voje Valley trail, where the path crosses a wooden bridge directly over Mostnica Gorge.
A Slot Carved by Ice Water
The gorge is short, maybe two hundred meters of accessible viewing from bridges and platforms, but the scale of it is disorienting. The Mostnica stream has cut a channel through the limestone so narrow in places that you could probably throw a stone across it, with walls carved into smooth, almost sculptural curves by centuries of glacial meltwater. The water itself runs a pale, mineral turquoise, moving fast enough to churn white in the narrower sections.
The Devil’s Bridge
Locals call the stone crossing point Hudičev Most — the Devil’s Bridge — after a legend involving a local girl, a debt, and the devil collecting his due in the usual folkloric fashion. The actual bridge is a modest stone arch, rebuilt more than once, but standing on it and looking down into the gorge’s slot, the name feels earned. The drop is significant, the water below moves with real force, and the whole scene has an appropriately ominous hush to it despite the daylight.
Onward Into Voje
Past the gorge, the trail opens into the Voje Valley proper — a wide glacial valley dotted with old hay barns and grazing cattle, with the peaks of the Triglav massif closing off the far end. We didn’t walk the full valley that day, saving it for a longer hike, but even the first kilometer beyond the gorge was enough to understand why this route gets recommended by people who’ve clearly hiked every trail around Bohinj and still come back to this one.
When to go: June through September, when the trail is dry and the meltwater is at its most vivid. The gorge itself takes twenty minutes; budget half a day if you plan to continue into the Voje Valley.
