Kamniška Bistrica

The valley where the Kamniška Bistrica river is born from a wall of limestone peaks, a short drive from Kamnik and the starting point for the cable car up to Velika Planina and the serious climbs into the Kamnik-Savinja high country.
We drove up to Kamniška Bistrica from Kamnik on a whim, planning only to take the cable car to Velika Planina, and ended up staying at the valley floor for an hour before we’d even bought the tickets. The river does that to you. It comes out of the mountainside already a proper river — cold, fast, absurdly clear — and there’s something about watching water begin that makes you stop whatever else you were planning to do.
Where the River Is Born
The Kamniška Bistrica spring, source of the river that gives the valley its name, emerges from beneath the rock at the valley’s head near a small chapel and a scattering of picnic tables. It isn’t a dramatic waterfall or a gushing cave mouth — it’s quieter than that, water simply appearing at full volume from the base of the mountain, already cold enough to numb your hand in seconds. I put my whole forearm in, which was a mistake I made only once. Lia laughed for longer than the moment strictly warranted.
Gateway to Velika Planina and the High Peaks
The valley functions as the main access point for two very different kinds of mountain experience. The cable car station sits a short drive further up the valley and lifts you five minutes to the pastoral plateau of Velika Planina — easy, family-friendly, over almost before it starts. But the valley is also the trailhead for serious alpine routes into the Kamnik-Savinja high peaks: Kokrsko Sedlo, Kamniško Sedlo, and eventually Kamniška Sedlo hut and beyond toward Grintovec, the range’s highest summit. We watched groups setting off with proper mountaineering gear while we were still deciding whether we needed a second coffee. Two very different mountains exist in the same valley, and you get to choose which one you came for.
An Easy Valley Walk
For those of us not equipped or inclined for the high routes, the valley floor itself offers an easy, well-marked walk alongside the river through mixed forest, past a small game park with deer and mouflon kept in large enclosures, and out to a couple of modest waterfalls that are easy to reach in under an hour round trip. It’s the kind of low-effort, high-reward walk that makes a perfect half-day if the weather or your legs aren’t up for the cable car and the plateau beyond.
When to go: May through October for the valley walk and cable car access; the high mountain routes are best from July to September once the snow has properly cleared. The spring and river are worth visiting in any season — the water runs cold and clear year-round.
