Lausanne

"The city built on hills and ideas."

Lausanne tumbles down hillsides toward Lake Geneva with an energy that its more composed neighbors lack. The city is built on three hills connected by bridges, metro, and steep staircases, giving every walk a vertical dimension and every viewpoint a new angle on the lake and the French Alps beyond. The Gothic Cathedral at the summit is one of the finest in Switzerland, and a night watchman still calls the hours from its tower — a tradition unbroken since medieval times.

The lakeside district of Ouchy is where Lausanne exhales. The Olympic Museum — headquarters of the International Olympic Committee — sits in lakeside gardens and is more engaging than its institutional name suggests. The Lavaux Vineyards begin just east of the city, UNESCO-listed terraces stepping down to the lake in rows that have been cultivated since the twelfth century. Walking through them at harvest time, with the lake glittering below and the Alps across the water, is one of Switzerland’s most quietly spectacular experiences. The student population keeps the nightlife lively and the restaurants affordable, at least by Swiss standards.

When to go: May to October for vineyard walks and lake life. September for the grape harvest in Lavaux, when the terraces glow gold and tastings happen in every village cellar.
